How far can you go before you reach what you would consider a particularly dangerous (narrow/crumbly/etc.) part of the trail? We're going in January 2011 and will have our four and a half year old with us. Like someone above, I think it'd be a great experience to hike even a bit of the trail but I also don't want to do anything too risky. (We'll have grandparents with us so can possibly leave him with them if my wife and I decide to do the trail.)

Another fantastic family-friendly campground in the redwoods is Memorial Park, part of the San Mateo County Parks & Rec Department. Beautiful, spacious campsites, swimming home, giant trees and ice cream cones at the little camp store. What more could you want in a weekend in the woods?

I love the Santa Barbara Zoo! Such a fun time and the perfect place to relax ( that big grassy lawn! by the giraffes). The train that goes through the park is great too, the kids love it (as you may know!) I try and make it there whenever I am in town, the kids actually look forward to it. I travel to Santa Barbara often and I love that there is so much to do! I always stay at the Sandman Inn (www.thesandmaninn.com). So affordable and very quaint and cozy. A very enjoyable place to stay.

Funny, we were just here today, although we opted for gold panning and playing in the American river instead of seeking out the actual discovery site. Overall it made for an excellent day with the cousins! Hope to return and do some river rafting and more serious plaque reading when the kids are a bit older.

I have visited Happy Hollow twice in the last 6 weeks with my 4.5 yr old daughter and though I am NOT an amusement park kind of gal, I thought it was a great experience. I was particularly happy to see there was one admission fee --and thats it. (no single ticket purchase per ride.) The food/candy/tempting junk was admirably out of sight and both times the crowds were completely tolerable. I arrived at 10am for both visits and left by 1:30 by which time, things were really getting busy. Good time to leave. Pack a picnic and arrive early. The carousel and the huge play structure were the biggest hits w my little one.
