There’s a home for everything

In Other News

We have a new address. Earlier this month, I finally mapped my WordPress site to my own domain name. We are now kidsgowest (dot) com. The old, less glamorous address-kidsgowest.wordpress.com-will still lead you to the same place though. But to help Google deal with any identity crisis, I’m kindly asking my loyal readers to use my new fancy address in links and bookmarks. Many appreciations.

We have a new Facebook fan page. Because I need just one more account to update, and because I want to give my three biggest fans more of me to enjoy, I have created our new Kids Go West page. Check out the new badge on the sidebar. Don’t make me beg; click on over to become our fan. I promise to not clog up your feed with all of my witty insights (just the good ones).

We have subscriptions. If you haven’t subscribed to our feed, then there’s no day like today. Go ahead, click on over to that little feeds button at the top of the page. We also have a You Tube video channel, if you’re into moving pictures go on over there and hook up with Kids Go West there.

Less January, More Paradise

It pitters. It patters. It’s hard to see past the gray, hazy skies of January, and remember a warmer time. My feet are cold, my tissue box has become my dearest friend, and I’m stuck inside a classroom full of second-graders all day long. I’m not complaining or anything. But I am turning to my photo library for some inspiration on this dreary Friday.

We’re Raveable

Time to toot our own horn: we’re the featured blogger on the Raveable website this week. You may have seen some little Raveable buttons around these parts lately, and if you click on them, you’ll find yourself at a very useful website. I’m always looking for help in picking out hotels, so this site is right up my alley. I especially love the categories of kid-friendly hotels listed by city. I’m already browsing the site for our trip to New York. I can fine tune my hotel search with such filters as: free parking, hotels with kitchenettes, hotels with rooftop pools. The hotels reviews are compiled, summarized, and make it easier to sift through the many choices. I love it. Go check out Raveable for your trip-planning needs, and this week you’ll get the added bonus of seeing our cute picture on the home page.

The Good Traveler

There are moments when I wonder if I’m good enough of a traveler. I never worried about this before. But now that I’ve ventured out into the world of travel blogging, it has become a real concern for me. I am now, more than ever, immersed in a world of traveling experts. I’m always reading about all the great trips other writers take and I wonder if I’ve got what it takes.

Do I have enough traveling experience under my belt to speak with any authority on the subject? Maybe, I shouldn’t claim to be an authority. Have I visited enough countries, cities or states?  Maybe, I’m not worldly enough. Will I be laughed off the stage for admitting that I’ve never actually been to New York? Well, I’ve been to the airport, but that doesn’t really count.

I’ve been hit with some serious travel blogging insecurities this year. I could seek some good Dr. Phil advice to help me get past it. Or maybe, I can stop travel blogging altogether. Avoidance works wonders, you know. Then I wouldn’t have to care about whether my traveler status was worthy enough. I could just take up a new hobby, say gardening, and blog my little heart out about that. (I’m not making fun of gardening, I really do want to pick it up as a hobby someday.)

I could blog about anything really, so why even bother with blogging about something I may not even be doing all that well. I will not be hiking in Nepal, jet-setting my way through Europe, or dropping my job to travel the world this year. There are both monetary and legal reasons I won’t even be leaving the country with my son anytime soon. My prospects for being a good travel writer seem dim.

But only when I’m talking all that nonsense. Because that’s all that is. And I don’t even need Dr. Phil to tell me that. There are many things that stand in the way of me being a good travel writer, but the quantity of my travel experiences is not one of them. I just have to remember this when I start to feel insecure: I am worthy of travel blogging.

Now on the first Monday of the year, I’m dreaming of loving travel blogging again. I want to stop worrying about whether my trips will be exotic or exciting enough. I don’t want spend hours trying to make a trip happen, when I know very well, that it just can’t happen for me this year.

I want to be in love with travel again. Now that’s a dream that I can turn into reality.

I’m linking up to Mother of All Trips’ Monday Dreaming post. She won’t judge me for whining so much this week, she’s just that cool.

It’s My Blogging Birthday

One year ago, I published my first post. It was short and sweet, like me. I am living proof that you don’t need to know much about blogging to blog. You just need an idea, an inkling to share it, and the ability to find the publish button on your screen. Now that doesn’t mean there isn’t much to learn along the way. Because there is. I find myself gaping at my laptop in confusion at least once a week-on a good week. On the bad weeks, I want to hit the delete blog button. Luckily, I can’t find that button. So Kids Go West lives on; powered by copious amounts of caffeine, lots of love and support, and just a few delusions of grandeur.

In honor of the big birthday, I’m wearing a tiara all day long, and I’m giving you a behind-the-scenes look at my plan for global domination the blog this year.

  1. I have a domain name, but I’m not ready to use it. The whole wordpress.com part of my web address is cramping my style. It’s long, and it’s not as professional. I’ve had my domain name all registered for a year now, but I’m not ready to go all website-y. So I may at least map (I think that’s what it’s called) the domain name to my existing blog and just keep the template the way it is for now…
  2. This is a labor of love. Which is why I’m in no hurry to go all pro yet. I don’t have the time or resources to compete with the big guns, so I’m going sit back and let the posts flow. Wait, that sounded a bit too hippie-dippy. I’m going to let the blog follow it’s own path. Still sounds too hippie-dippy. I’m going to write about what I love, love what I write, and wait for the fame and fortune to roll in. Take that Donald Trump.
  3. I will share my writing with the world (but not so much). One thing that I’ve been surprised by, as a newcomer, is how much writing bloggers are asked to give away for free, or for very little compensation. My writing is a valuable resource and I don’t take it lightly. I will write to gain experience, to promote something I believe in, or to gain a foothold in the travel blogging community. Or just because I like you. But I won’t let the bigger fish get their hands on free content from me-for their monetary gain-without giving me my fair dues. All that ranting aside, I do plan on writing more guest posts for my blogging friends this year. Let me know if you’d like a guest post from me, just be very, very patient with me. I’ll get it to you, it just may take a while.
  4. There’s so much to learn. Part of the reason I started to blog, was that I needed a new challenge in my life. I’ve been at my current profession for many years, and I was ready to expand my horizons. I’m learning how to be a more effective writer, a better photographer, and how to market myself as a writer. I didn’t become an expert in my profession in one year, so I don’t expect that will happen as a professional writer either. I’m willing to learn, but still have a long way to go.
  5. Meeting the bloggers behind the comments. Last June, I met Lorraine from Keeps Me Smiling and it was tres cool to interact with a fellow blogger in sentences longer than 140 characters. I need to find the time to do that more. So I’m all signed up for TBEX ’10 conference in New York and hope to make an appearance during (what I lovingly call) the East Coast Insanity Tour that I’m planning for next summer. I hope to meet more of the masterminds behind the blogs I’ve been reading this year. So if you’d like to set up a coffee date sometime, give me a holla. Except for weirdo stalkers, there will be no coffee dates for you.

I’m blowing out the candle on my cake, and getting ready for another year. I’m also going to open presents, so send me lots of shiny, wrapped boxes. Thanks again for stopping by.

A Year in the Life of Kids Go West

It was a good year for my me and my son. Here we are in the final days of 2009, and we are healthy, happy, and just a bit more well-traveled. Yes, I’d have to say it was a fantastic year. So as I sit here with my pom-pom slippers-pondering my good fortune-I think it’s appropriate to share my joy with the world. Today I’m going to my blogging mountaintop to post forth my travel blessings.

I searched the blog for some of my favorite posts. I have to admit that I’m proud of how I captured these travel moments, happy that I decided to dabble in the world of blogging, and looking forward to another year. (You’ve been warned!)

Sometimes they were blessings in disguise, otherwise known as the story of my life.

  • Here’s a little story of an unexpected road trip moment: Red Dawn on I-5 I will always remember my sleepy kid in the back seat, waking up and uttering: “The sun is a big red ball, mami!”.
  • And I found that sometimes I can come up with posts even when I’m swamped and under pressure. I wrote this one in a hotel room in February:  When Maps Fall Into the Wrong Hands.
  • Being a travel blogger means that I need to get out there as much as possible. So you can imagine my frustration when a long awaited trip was detoured in: Surviving a Sickation.

Sometimes I got a bit sappy about it.

  • In August we sat on the beach in Kauai and I was gifted a heart : The Fuzzy Moments.
  • This Snorkel Dream is just one of the reasons why I travel with my kid, despite all the trouble.

And there was always adventure to be found.

I have a video camera and I know how to use it. Apologies.

And now for one more appreciation: you. Thanks to all of you who have stopped by to visit, contributed with your comments, and gave me a reason to keep up with the challenging task of maintaining a blog. You’ve helped make this a memorable year for me.

Wishing the happiest of holiday seasons to all the Photo Friday folks over at Delicious Baby.

Photo Friday: Samba From Neverland

There I am in downtown San Jose, waiting for my little guy to board the Samba Balloon Ride, when I see this sign. Unbeknown to me, we were standing next to a little piece of pop culture history. I was also unknowingly blocking the sign from a lady trying to take a picture of it. Apparently, the historical significance of these spinning hot-air balloons didn’t escape her either.

The Balloon Samba is just one of the rides that were bought from Michael Jackson by Butler Amusements in 2008, and  after being featured at the California State Fair this past summer, have been making their way across California. They are currently stationed outside the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose as part of Christmas in the Park.

I’m linking up this photo to Delicious Baby’s Photo Friday. Hopefully, that lady behind me wasn’t a travel blogger and going to post up this photo too.

Dreaming of the Money Tree

My vacation plans are always bigger then my pocketbook. Every week, I dream of places I’d like to visit. Soon. This year. How about for Spring Break? My list of dream destinations is long, but my savings account is very small.

And I’m one of the lucky ones. I have a job with a lot of vacation time and a salary that makes it possible to take myself and my son on at least two big trips a year. I think of all the people I know who have lost their job or are barely making enough money to make ends meet, and I feel blessed to travel as much as I do. So I’m not going to whine and pout too much this Monday. Just enough to get it out of my system. I promise.

It’s just that lately my wanderlust has been mighty strong. It has been a few months since our last big trip and I’m ready to hit the open road again. I get tempted to pull out that credit card. I search for online deals. I contemplate taking time off work, so I can score some of those better prices on hotels and flights. I see that darned Disney commercial, with all the happy kids and Christmas decorations, and I think: what if I just drive down to Anaheim for a couple of days? Then I take out my calculator, crunch those magical numbers and realize that a two-day trip will cost me at least $600 for two people. As a single mom, that’s six hundred dollars that I can’t afford to spend. Even when I take the amusement park out of the equation, the price of a long weekend getaway can easily drain my very tight travel budget. And believe me, I know how to be a frugal traveler.

So I have to save and be patient. Soon enough, I will be packing for a trip. In the meantime, my son and I sit around dreaming of places we’d like to visit. Some days we actually lay out a map at bedtime and plan out routes instead of reading a bedtime story. Truthfully, all the dreaming and planning is half the fun.

Who needs the money tree anyway? I have a couple of paper maps to keep me busy for now. I also have lots of great travel posts around the blogosphere to keep me dreaming, starting with Mother of all Trips’ Monday Dreaming.

Pictured: Creatures, Great but Small

It often happens that whenever we’re out and about, we’ll come across a little animal and my son will utter the following words: “Take a picture of it”. So we do. That’s why my photo library is littered with tiny animals. I don’t have the camera or photographic skill to even capture these little animals in any sort of interesting way. Well, I’ll admit that I don’t even try. I’m just taking the photos because I’m appeasing my son.

But whatever the reason, or the outcome, these photos capture some of the little moments on our trips. They also show that young kids will find something interesting wherever they go. You may be standing next to the most awesome of all natural wonders, but your kid will spend most of the time fascinated by the little gecko under the rock. So here are some of the truly fascinating creatures that have crossed our path (often literally) on our travels. Get out those magnifying glasses. Oh, and my favorite are the dung beetles.
