Confessions of a Slacker Skier

The last time I went skiing, I was pregnant. That was (hate to admit it) eight years ago. Sigh.

I don’t know exactly why I haven’t skied since, but I have a hunch that it has something to do with sleep deprivation, and the lack of any sort of exercise routine. Nowadays, all of my extreme snow activities involve hot cocoa and a comfy couch. What can I say? Marshmallows have a special power over me.

I’m ‘fessing up to my newfound slacker lifestyle, because I hope to turn it around in the near future. This weekend, I’m taking my son skiing for the first time. Actually, the private ski instructor I booked is taking my son skiing for the first time. I’ll be hiding behind the ski racks trying to sneak in a few pictures of the momentous occasion and trying to not fret too much about all the possible dangers that could befall him.

I’m hoping that my son really takes to this new experience on skis. I’m also hoping that I can fit into my ski pants soon and join him up on the slopes. I may just have to put down the marshmallows for that to happen though. A small price to pay for the chance to whizz down the slopes with my favorite little guy.

I’ll be writing about my son’s ski experience soon. In the meantime, I’m planning a few snow-inspired posts in the coming week.

There are plenty of other moms who have written on why skis and kids can mix. Here are some of my favorites:

Meg at Backpack to Buggy wrote about her dream to get her family skiing.

Lorraine at Keeps Me Smiling frequents the same snowy spot as our family in Truckee, and she shares her tips for skiing with kids.

Mara at Mother of All Trips provides the photographic inspiration.

  1. I want to get my daughter on skates (and she wants to get on skates!), but last year when I had the time I was pretty pregnant and too giant/scared to strap on my blades. This year’s been so super busy, it’s been tough to try to squeak it in.

You’ve inspired me to try a little harder ;)

  2. And what about YOU on skis again? We can’t always make it about the kids. (Oh, I wear my brother’s old ski pants from high school. It was embarrassing getting them on, barely, but no tighter than the ski boots.)

Have a great time, and I am looking forward to the pictures.

  3. I know, I know, I’m going to get on those skis again, before they become vintage. I have a goal of getting fit again this year and leaving my sloth-lifestyle behind me.

  4. The couch and I have been friends this month also. I’m so cold I feel like I barely move anymore. Maybe reading your post about D’s ski experience will motivate me to get up there again. Thanks for the generous mention!

  5. I’m have trouble just getting the kids to see snow, so I can’t imagine getting them (or me) on skiis! Kudos to you for making the effort — and I look forward to reading about your adventure soon. (BTW, I’m with Meg — you gotta get out there, too!)

  6. O can’t wait to hear how it all goes. I am not a skier ( out of fear for my own life. I am such a klutz!) but I really want my kids to ski with their dad… while I get drunk in the lodge….

  7. wait, did i read that right? the last time you were on skis you were pregnant?! wow mamacita! that’s sumpin’, i could hardly stand up when i was pg. living in VT made a skiier out of me, but admittedly, it’s the darn COST even at the family slopes 30 mins from home. still, he went for the first time last weekend, and hit a tree. he had a helmet but now i’m looking for a full-body ski armor for him.

  8. Simone, oh crap, not the tree… You’re right it’s so darn expensive. Especially with all the gear you have to rent or replace every year for kids.
