Red Dawn on I-5

Red Dawn

It was Saturday, and I had been up since 4:30 in the morning. After a long week at work, I was bit grouchy about the whole getting-in-the-car-for-a-seven-hour-drive thing. Looking ahead to a long, uneventful stretch of road between the Bay Area and Los Angeles, I was feeling a bit sorry for myself.

Then the sun rose up through the haze, and I got a bit of the sublime on that early morning drive. It made me forget I wanted a second cup of coffee. Well…almost.

This bit of road trip magic is linked up at Delicious Baby’s Photo Friday. Go check out some more photo magic.

  1. Ugh, that stretch of road… I remember it not-so-fondly. The Grapevine, the inability to get a decent radio station, the bumper-to-bumper traffic – and yet you found a moment to find beauty. Nicely done!

  2. I used to do this drive routinely during college – often I took 101 even though it was longer because it was so pleasant.

Still, even on 5, I always looked forward to the cookies at Harris Ranch ;)

  3. I have a LOT of childhood memories of being hauled out of bed at some crazy hour to drive down the I5 corridor – not all of them are good, but I do remember enjoying skies just like that one.

  4. Oh wow! When we moved to the US first, we knew no-one except some Irish friends in the LA area – we were in SF. We drove the I5/101 many, many weekends during that first year.
Thanks for triggering some fond memories for me :)

  5. Blah…I used to drive this all the time with family when I was in high school…can anyone say Grapevine and no air conditioner?!?!?!

  6. I’m not a morning person, either…but the rare glimpse of a view like this make you forget your crankiness at that time of the morning…almost :?

  7. Kudos to you for being awake enough (and not crabby enough) to catch this nice shot!

  8. I think what made me take notice more, of course, was sharing that moment with my son. He had been super crabby as well, and when he finally woke up, and the sun was coming up. He was enjoying seeing the big red ball in the horizon. It reminded me that in his short life, he hadn’t seen that many dawns.
All new to him…reminds me to appreciate it more. That’s the one good thing about traveling with kids.

Thanks for all the comments, I notice that many of you share that love/hate relationship with I-5 or early morning drives.

  9. There’s something nice about being up before the rest of the world, once you can heave yourself out of bed.
